Hamanishi Farms has a team dedicated and committed to soil nutrition and sustainable farming.

About

Hamanishi Farms believes it has stayed in business for over 60 years due to the company’s core principles of serving its community and customers by providing the highest quality of food grown in some of the richest soil in the country.

Over the past two decades, Hamanishi Farms made the decision to transition from conventional farming to organic and sustainable agriculture.  Simply put, this means less chemicals in our food and soil that's bioavailable and rich, producing nutrient-dense produce.

We believe using Roundup Ready GMO (genetically modified organisms) seeds and Roundup Ready fertilizer (i.e. glyphosate) is harmful to the soil and to the food it produces. CEO and Owner George McClelland says, "Our core belief is that human health is rooted in soil nutrition".  Farm Manager Manuel Trapero oversees the day-to-day operations at Hamanishi Farms, making sure the bioavailability of the fields and soil health remain the farm’s top priority.

History

After World War II, Japanese Americans Arthur “Art” and Suye Hamanishi moved to Ontario, Oregon in 1943. Soon thereafter, in 1945, they started their own farming business across the border in Western Idaho.

In the early 1960s, Art became one of the first farmers to bring peppermint and spearmint to the Treasure Valley. He began distilling his mint varieties into pure peppermint and spearmint oil extracts.

Hamanishi Farms became incorporated in 1974 and not long after, in 1977, Art’s daughter Carol and son-in-law George McClelland joined the farm with their children working on the farm throughout the years.
